Virus Basics
COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019)

Caused by SARS-CoV-2 virus
-
Can be very contagious and spreads quickly
-
Most often causes respiratory symptoms that can feel like a cold, the flu, or pneumonia.
-
Most people with COVID-19 have mild symptoms, but some people become severely ill.
Influenza (flu)
-
Caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs
-
Anyone can get flu but people 65 years and older, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions , pregnant people, and children younger than 5 years are at higher risk of developing serious flu-related complications if they get sick.
Respiratory Syncitial Virus (RSV)
-
Usually causes mild, cold-like symptoms.
-
Most people recover in a week or two.
-
Can cause serious illness sometimes requiring hospitalization especially in infants and older adults.
CDC recommends RSV vaccines for:

all adults ages 75 and older
-
all adults ages 60-74 at increased risk of severe RSV disease
-
people 32 through 36 weeks pregnant during September through January(or a preventive antibody can be given to your baby after birth)
