About
WNV

  • West Nile virus (WNV) is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the US.

  • It is usually spread thorugh the bite an infected mosquito.

  • Most people infected with WNV do not feel sick.

    • About 1 in 5 people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms

    • About 1 out of 150 infected people develop a serious, sometimes fatal, illness.

  • There are no vaccines to prevent or medicines to treat WNV in people.

  • Reduce your risk of WNV by preventing mosquito bites.

 

ABOUT
EEE

  • Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE)  is a rare but very serious illness.

    • Approximately 30% of people who develop severe EEE die.

    • Many survivors have ongoing neurologic problems. 

  • It is usually spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. 

  • There are no vaccines to prevent or medicines to treat eastern equine encephalitis.

  • Reduce your risk of EEE by preventing mosquito bites.

MOSQUITO BITES

  • Take steps to protect yourself and your family from mosquito bites that can make you sick.

    • Use Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellents.

    • Wear loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants.

    • Wear clothing and gear treated with permethrin.

    • Control mosquitoes indoors and outdoors.
