SafeKids
The Chatham Health District would like to announce that it is now the new local Safe Kids chapter. This new chapter, Safe Kids Chatham, will cover the towns of Colchester, East Haddam, East Hampton, Haddam, Hebron, Marlborough and Portland. Since 1992, Safe Kids Connecticut has been a statewide network of people and organizations who work together to prevent childhood injury. Safe Kids programs and initiatives deliver hands-on education to families around the country. Each Safe Kids program focuses on protecting children and families from a specific injury risk. After reviewing data from emergency room visits and leading causes of unintentional injury for children ages 1-19, we would like to focus on the following areas:
Home Safety
Dog Bites
Fire Safety/Burns Poisonings
Helmet Use
Motor Vehicle Accidents
Drowning in Tubs/Pools
We are actively seeking committed community partners from each of these towns to form a coalition of members who possess a strong commitment in protecting children from unintentional injury. Some activities our coalition may do, lead or participate in include:
-
Carry out Safe Kids events and activities
-
Teach parents and caregivers about preventing child injury
-
Distribute safety devices in the community
-
Advocate for better laws to protect kids
